The Lotus Cortina Mk 1, also known as the Cortina Lotus, is a high-performance version of the popular Ford Cortina compact car. It was produced by the British manufacturer Lotus in collaboration with Ford between 1963 and 1966.
The Lotus Cortina Mk 1 was powered by a modified 1.6-litre Ford engine that was fitted with twin Weber carburetors, a new camshaft, and other performance enhancements. This resulted in a power output of 105 horsepower, which was significantly higher than the standard Cortina. The car also featured a close-ratio gearbox, a limited-slip differential, and stiffer suspension for improved handling and performance.
On the exterior, the Lotus Cortina Mk 1 was distinguished by its Lotus badges, alloy wheels, and two-tone paint scheme. Inside, the car featured bucket seats, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a dashboard with extra gauges.
The Lotus Cortina Mk 1 achieved considerable success in motorsport, particularly in touring car racing. It won several championships, including the European Touring Car Championship in 1964 and the British Saloon Car Championship in 1965 and 1966.
Today, the Lotus Cortina Mk 1 is a highly sought-after classic car, valued for its performance, rarity, and motorsport heritage. Well-maintained examples can command high prices at auction and are cherished by enthusiasts around the world.
